My name is Dailyn McAdoo, I am a Geography and Environmental Studies Major at the University of Colorado Springs, Colorado achieving my bachelors degree. Unsure what I wanted to study, I started my college education in Dallas, Texas at Eastfield Community College. Shortly after I began my basic studies, I decided to move to Colorado Springs Colorado where I attended Pikes Community College in 2019. There I took an Into to Environmental Studies course, and I absolutely fell in love with the material that was being taught. My mother has always had a passion for sustainability while I was growing up, so it all fell into place around this time. From PPCC I transferred to UCCS.
During my education ventures here at UCCS I have taken some wonderful classes such as Techno Natures, Inequality USA, Urban Ecology, and Research Methods. I have also a part of the Green Action Fund Committee where we vote on, and fund student led sustainable projects. I have had the opportunity to win first place for my UCCS Farm Hügelkultur Project Presentation at the CU President’s Sustainable Solutions Challenge; this project has also been funded by the Green Action Fund Committee. During the implementation of this project at the UCCS Farm I had multiple classes from the Geography and Environmental Studies Department as well as nearby community members come to the Farm to participate in learning about sustainable permaculture methods. Over the course of my studies, I have also volunteered at the Smoke Brush Organic Farm in Manitou Springs were they practice biodynamics to ensure sustainable farming.
Some short-term career aspirations are to work as a water quality specialist in high density areas, such as a ground-water specialist, or water pollution control. Long term goals are to move into developing areas overseas to work more specifically with fast fashion companies to ensure a more sustainable production and waste process. I am so passion about this work because water is not only a necessity for all living things, but it connects us all. There are so many things that poor water quality impacts from health issues, to environmental issues, which covers many different dimensions of disciplines, which is why we have a responsivity to safeguard its health in order for our own survival and the survival of our environments.
